These International Vocational Qualifications (IVQs) in Construction helps you develop knowledge and skills in the construction industry across a range of sectors. You cover the theory and also do hands-on practical units.
An IVQ in Construction is for anyone looking to gain skills in the construction industry. Because they're recognised internationally they're especially useful if you want to work outside the UK. You may be quite new to construction or aiming to move into a role with more responsibility. You might also be planning to move on to higher level qualifications.

 

This course allows students to gain a Level 1 City and Guilds Plumbing and Heating qualification, ideal if you are interested in getting into the building services industry. It covers all the essential basic skills and knowledge you'll need to start working as a plumber, or engineer specialising in heating or ventilation.

It consists of practical and theory assignments and training so that students finishing the diploma have a good foundation from which to begin work or continue studying towards Level 2.

The core components of this plumbing and heating course are installation, repair and maintenance of plumbing systems, above ground drainage, pipework (copper, plastic, low carbon steel) and plumbing science.

Four additional subjects are also covered in this qualification:

  • Structure of the construction industry
  • Environmental
  • Sustainability measures in domestic dwellings
  • Site preparation in the construction industry

Level 2 is ideal if you've some experience and basic skills in the construction industry and you want to increase your knowledge and skills to take on more responsibility. You may already have supervisory responsibilities but want to progress your career or specialise.
There are six diplomas offered at Level 2:
Level 2 IVQ Diploma in Timber Vocations
Level 2 IVQ Diploma in Trowel Vocations
Level 2 IVQ Diploma in Painting and Decorating
Level 2 IVQ Diploma in Plumbing
Level 2 IVQ Diploma in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning
Level 2 IVQ Diploma in Electrical Installation
The Level 2 IVQ Diploma in Timber Vocations offers two pathway on completion of three core units: Site Carpentry, in which you complete this extra core unit: Site carpentry 2 practice. Bench Joinery, in which you complete this extra core unit: Bench joinery 2 practice.
For both pathways you also choose one optional unit from:
Trowel vocations basic skills practice Painting and decorating basic skills practice Plumbing basic skills practice Refrigeration and air conditioning basic skills practice Electrical installation basic skills practice. There are no pathways for the remaining Level 2 diplomas, however you will complete three core units and choose one optional unit within these chosen fields.
